Cardhound chimes in an least once per season with news and notes from around the vintage hobby. Here’s an around the horn of some recent headlines that might be of interest. Read to the bottom for info on additional prizes and discounts available to Cardhounds!
Welcome Rabbit Hole Auctions
Justin Hirsch is a “friend of Cardhound” and the debut auction for his new company Rabbit Hole Auctions is just around the corner. The emphasis is affordable vintage, unique rarities and eclectic oddities for every budget. There is still time to consign for the September auction, and if you register to bid, tell ’em Cardhound referred you!
Cardhounds who register are entered into 2 drawings including a $250 auction credit!
Other Auction News
I also had my eye on the most recent Love of the Game auction, and did manage to land a great Cuban card of Negro Leaguer Clint Thomas for my personal collection. But the show-stopper of the summer auction was this 1923-24 Tomas Gutierrez card of Oscar Charleston in SGC 4, which set an all-time record for a Cuban card at over $250,000.
High-end vintage in general continues to break records. A PSA 9 1955 Topps Clemente rookie just sold for $1.15 million at the most recent Heritage auction, edging out previous record sales of Clemente rookies.
How’s the Market Otherwise?
I’ll work on a deep dive market report in the fall. But in the meantime don’t forget about the Cardhound 100 Vintage Card Index on Market Movers. And Cardhounds also get a nice discount on the full Market Movers suite here. Signs point to maybe the slightest flattening recently among vintage icons in attainable grades. More soon in the full report.
SGC Speeds Up Service
Suddenly, SGC is meeting its advertised turnaround times again, after months of relatively slow service. Read up here for more context about recent shake-ups at SGC since being bought by PSA parent Collectors. I’ll get into a Gemrate grading volume analysis once August comes to a close, but I’ll guess SGC volume is way down since eliminating bulk submitter rates.
The National Breaks Attendance Records
The National in Chicago was incredibly fun but also featured some incredibly long lines this year. If show attendance is any indication of the health of card collecting overall, we seem to be in a good place. The NSCC folks report “double-digit growth” over the 100,000+ who attended Cleveland last year. I was prepared to see so much Pokemon and was pleasantly surprised by the large volume of vintage dealers, inventory, and trade-night attendees.
My fun at the National involved getting this Aaron auto graded. This was an in-person auto by me in about 1985! I just wanted to try out the service (which I really like).
