From time to time we will hear from our sponsor Eric Drew at Boca Card Subs (SGC group submitter extraordinaire). His tips can help you get the most out of your card grading experience. In this case, let’s look at OPC rough cuts.
This week’s informative tip concerns vintage OPC cards, which are notorious for their rough-cut edges. Cardhound just wrote a piece about rough cuts, and Eric’s visuals this week confirm what we said there. When the rough cut is an inherent in the manufacturing process, graders treat the cut as “normal.” Thus, the cards can still grade quite high.
OPC Rough Cuts and SGC Grading
Eric says: “We sometimes get asked if OPC cards are worth subbing because of their centering issues and rough cuts. Here are some success stories from people subbing OPC through our group. There is some leniency with the rough cuts for sure since they all had it. SGC is always tough on centering of course. If you’re unsure about which of your OPC cards to sub, these pictures should provide some guidelines for what to look for if you want the highest possible grade.”

Cardhound has a help article on how to submit cards to group submitters like Boca for SGC grading. A good group sub often saves a bit of time and money. And Boca hand-delivers and picks up your cards, so there is no extra shipping time or expense.
