✨ Activity 4: Assessing Surface
Objective: Analyze surface quality—gloss, scratches, creases, stains--and understand impact of flaws on the grade.
Instructions:
-
It is important to view card surfaces under good light. See the attached card. How does this surface wax affect the grade, in your opinion? (Note: surface wax ca be easily and safely removed)
-
Upload pictures of a few cards from your own collection and note any minor or major flaws. Look for scratches, poor registration, wrinkles, creases, loss of original gloss, and fading in addition to major flaws like pinholes or tears.
-
Assign a surface grade to each of your own examples based on your assessments.
-
Extension: “What are the fatal flaws that result in a max 1-1.5 grade, and do you agree with those criteria?”
