Put another way, if two cards are in the same general condition, but one is very well centered and the other is not, will they get the same grade, as long as the 2nd card meets the minimum centering requirement for that grade?

Centering is one of the most important subgrades. That is why it carries more weight than say edges. Grading is all about eye appeal and bad centering is not appealing.
We have what we call the CGC Centering Chart that graders use. Somewhat like a slide rule in that when you determine the measurement for centering left to right and top to bottom, you line these up and find the grade for centering.
Centering is important at all grade levels. When you have 2 cards that have the same physical condition grade, the card with the better centering is going to be the better of the two.
