Ryan we have chatted about this a bit but I'm curious. Based on your past exploits / travels to Cuba and South America and your sense of things in general . . . how much undiscovered stuff is still out there re: Cuban and South American cards? Are there any other sets likely to surface? Do you think there are HUNDREDS of Deportivo albums out there (for example), or just dozens? Is there a next frontier of Cuban and negro leaguer collecting on the horizon? Thanks for hanging out with us for this Forum event.
I think a good comp for this would be 19th century cards as well as early tobacco cards. Are there still Old Judges to be found in the wild? I'm sure there are. But the great majority are tucked away in collections. But new finds, and even new sets do still turn up. For Cuban cards, there are certainly some albums that have yet to be unearthed, but most of what remains on the island is in the hands of a small number of collectors and dealers. At this point I would say there are far more Cuban cards in the United States than there are in Cuba. There are definitely not hundreds of Caramelo Deportivo albums. Maybe not even dozens. I think in the future most of what is offered for sale will come in the form of collectors consigning to auction houses. This is something that is already happening.
Of course, I'll still be out and about trying to make more discoveries!
