✅ Activity 4: Feel Is Real
Objective: Understand tactile tests collectors can use in person.
Activity:
In-Person Practice Task – Counterfeits are most often printed on more modern card stock. So let's compare modern stock to some vintage stock. Keep in mind that vintage stock also differs--compare a 1957 Topps to a 1959 for example and you will see differences.
For this activity, compare and contrast a half-dozen cards in your collection (3 modern, 3 vintage).
Some aspects to compare: weight, thickness, surface sheen front and back, appearance under black light, appearance under magnification, and flex tests.
Log and share your observations on each of those characteristics–and provide photos if needed.
Quick Tips:
- Fakes may feel too stiff or too light (like modern stock)
- Original vintage cards have era-specific thickness and finish
- Many counterfeits have "smooth" or almost glossy backs
- Most vintage cards have sort of an "orange peel" or slightly bumpy surface
