It's often debated that more recent grades are tougher than a few years ago. I have not studied this closely but anecdotally this seems to be possibly true. Has anyone taken a really close look?

I would say it's plain as day that yes, grading tightened up considerably, somewhere around the pandemic if not a bit before. I haven't seen any big formal studies on this, but the eyeball test tells me that if you go back 2-3 generations of slabs with either PSA or SGC, you can often subtract 1-2 points vs. brand new grades. This isn't every card of course--always "buy the card not the grade"--but there is a definite trend imo.
